The ideas of identity have never been more center stage. One person identifies as a man, another as a woman, another as a transgender. Then someone else steps into the room that identifies as a giraffe. What defines identity? More and more the answer to that question has been “feelings do”. Historically, it has always been “fact” that ruled in the identity discussion, but the Zeitgeist of our times has become much more soft, squishy, and touchy-feely in its answer to this important question. So much so, that if you feel like you are a cell phone, then you must be a cell phone. Though every sensible person looking on knows that you are, indeed, NOT a cell phone. When the Truth is obscured in an individual life or in an entire culture, something other than Truth will lead that life and that culture. The Church must return to the Truth as its King, Counselor, and Guide. And only then can it help steer this misguided culture back in the direction of true identity.
